Today's episode is inspired by the book, "Make It Stick" (getflashnotes.com/make_it_stick), where the authors explain the science of successful learning.
The big idea we'll focus on in this episode, is about the difference between "Massed Practice" and "Interleaved Practice" (Hint: one contributes to improved memory, long-term learning, and mastery of skills; the other contributes to worse memory, faster forgetting, and zero mastery).

“Hello Dean, I’ve been binge-listening to your podcast for a few days and I’m loving your insights on productivity and meaningful work. My self-development question for you is on simplifying my way to success in the coming year. I want to adopt a simple yet effective system for achieving my goals and maintain my motivation to stay focused every day. But what I struggle with most is, that I can’t get myself to follow or stick with a complicated system like GTD. I know GTD works, but I really just want something simple. My question: If there was one single productivity tool you would recommend to get myself in order this coming year, what would it be?”
—(Question submitted by: Eileen E.)
In my 10 years of studying self-development material on topics like human motivation, productivity, and peak performance; I’ve only ever come across one single productivity tool that’s been reliable enough to recommend oner and over again…
The tool I’m talking about is
more flexible than anything I’ve come across,
is incredibly portable,
and it never—ever—runs out of batteries.
What’s this magical piece of productivity technology I’m speaking of?

Today I’m super-excited to introduce a new content line-up to the mix—and we’ll be calling it the FlashClass — Big ideas from popular books, condensed into actionable audio lessons, about 5-minutes in length.
Each FlashClass is …
designed to help you get more knowledge in less time
focuses on a single big idea from a popular business or self-help book from the getflashnotes.com library
made to make hard-to-grasp ideas easy and actionable
FlashClass: Protein Powder, The China Study, and Turning Cancer Off
Book: The China Study
Category: Health
Today’s FlashClass is inspired by The China Study, and it’s all about protein consumption…
In case you’ve never heard about the book, The China Study is the largest epidemiological study ever conducted. In a nutshell: 650,000 researchers catalogued and analyzed the death rates for 880 million Chinese citizens—96% of China’s population. Dr. Colin Campbell then, took the findings from the study, and wrote this book so that people everywhere could benefit from the findings… Especially those of us in the western world, who are amongst the un-healthiest people on the planet.
Almost every day, for four excruciating years, I was living in a box…
I woke up to a littledigital box sitting next to my bed stand… After slamming the snooze button on my little box, I’d finally rise, get ready, and head downstairs to eat a box breakfast.
Then I’d climb into my box car. Sit in traffic for 3 hours with a bunch of otherboxes. Drive to a big box building. And walk into my box of a cubicle.
Then I’d work within that box for a few hours; breaking every now and then forbox-related activities of various kinds—like the bathroom box, or the break roombox—until it was time to eat my box lunch in a box cafeteria with my co-workers who were also eating out of their very own boxes.
After lunch, I’d head back to my cubicle box to do more unexciting work—which sometimes involved shifting from one box to another or using the phone box to call other people in other boxes to talk about boring box things.
Sometimes though, I’d get so stressed out about catching up on all of my unexciting work, that I would stay in my cubicle box and eat my box lunch while working or talking on my phone box.
Obviously the boxed life wasn’t for me… Which is why I chose to leave it behind. But hundreds of thousands of people in the US, and millions around the world, are still living the boxed life… Maybe, *you’re* listening to (or reading) this right now, realizing that you’re living in a box… And if that makes you feel like you’re wasting away you’re life, then I’d highly suggest you decide to do something about it before it’s too late.
It never seizes to amaze me, that people can spend 65% of their waking hours working in a box building, in a box cubicle, only to be told that they should “really try to think outside the box.”
Are you kidding me?
Think outside the box?
How the hell could anyone be expected to think outside the box when everything they do is inside the box?”
They live in a box
They work in a box
they even shit in a box
And then they’re told to THINK outside the box!?
NO. You cannot “think” outside the box if you live your life inside of one.Click-to-tweet

In psychology, stress is a feeling of strain and pressure. Small amounts of stress may be desired, beneficial, and even healthy. Positive stress helps improve athletic performance. It also plays a factor in motivation, adaptation, and reaction to the environment. Excessive amounts of stress, however, may lead to bodily harm. Stress can increase the risk of strokes, heart attacks, ulcers, and mental illnesses such as depression.

Meaningfulhq.com/i-get-to.html // How much of your day is spent doing things you have to do (as opposed to the things you get to do.) In my experience, the people who’ve built the most fulfilling + successful lifestyle are those that spend the majority of their time in the “I get to” zone ... and this isn’t because they’ve gotten really good at delegating all of their "have to dos" (although it's true to a certain extent) but because they’ve REDEFINED the way they perceive their lives.
* Q: “Should I share my goals, or would it be better to keep them private?” —(Question submitted by Roy L.)
Your goals—to share, or not to share?
Short answer: it depends on the goal.
Personally, I always used to share my goals with anyone who’d listen …
..But I quickly realized this wasn’t the smartest approach because of the sheer number of individuals that love drinking Haterade (otherwise known as: haters, dream killers, negative people, pessimists, etc.)
So, I ended up modifying my goal-sharing approach and splitting my goals up into two distinct categories...
George Bernard Shaw once said, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
So, what’s the best way to go about “creating yourself”?
I believe it begins by creating a vision.
Everything big begins with a compelling vision—a clear mental picture of what you want. People who see more clearly take more bold steps. If you’re in a dark room and you can’t see very well, you take little small baby steps.
Why? Because you’re not sure. Things are dark. Unclear.
The more sure you become, the more confident you become, the bigger your steps. The more quickly you can get what you want.
But it doesn’t happen without a clear compelling vision. We all need vision.

That’s what I’d tell people when they asked about how I met my girlfriend (now, wife.)
Little did they know, I was too embarrassed to tell them we met on Match.com.
I’d pepper lots of other little details (ehem: lies) about what I said and how I approached her, but my story about where we met (Starbucks) never changed.
I was even specific about the exact location—“We met at the Starbucks in downtown Brea, right next to the Corner Bakery.”
I did my best to keep my wife’s friends away from my friends at mutual gatherings, too. This is because she was honest with her friends and family about how we met.
And then there was the wedding…
We got married on a beautiful yacht, overlooking Newport Beach, CA. Everything about it was better than expected. Except for how much I was freaking out about my friends potentially finding out that I lied to them about how I met the woman I’m marrying. When we were planning seating arrangements, I had to make sure that my friends and family were on one side of the yacht, and my wife’s were on the other. Except of course, for the one’s on my wife’s side who promised to maintain my Starbucks “decoy story.”
It took me another two years after the wedding to tell my friends and family that I actually met my wife online. (And my dad still doesn’t know.)
I joke about it all now, because it seems so foolish that I’d ever hidden it in the first place. But truth be told, looking for love online is one of the most sensible things a single person can do for themselves…
I mean, where else can you find and drill down on exactly what you’re looking for in an ideal mate? At most reputable online dating services (not Tinder), you can filter from race, religion, and spiritual inclination; down to habits, ambitions, and geographical proximity.
In fact, according to Aziz Ansari’s new book, Modern Romance, over one-third of couples who got married in the US between 2005–2012 met each other on an online dating site. (And these numbers have likely shot up exponentially over the subsequent years thereafter)
That said, Ansari and his co-author Eric Klinenberg—the social scientist who helped him write this surprisingly well-researched book—say that social stigmas are still quite prevalent among people because they’re afraid to admit that they met their partner online … Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who felt the need to make up a “decoy story” about how I met my mate.
In this book summary/article/episode, we’ll be going over a few knowledge bombs gleaned from Modern Romance, including:
online dating etiquette,
3 steps to crafting the perfect text message, and
why too many choices can be a bad thing.

Use “No Matter What” Commitments to Strengthen Willpower, Defeat Decision Fatigue, and Motivate Yourself
Here’s what the average morning scenario looked like for me before I learned how to keep my commitments:
It’s 5:00AM.
I’m startled awake by the sound of sirens ringing so damn loud it feels like a firetruck is plowing through my brain.
I realize the sirens aren’t coming from a firetruck—they’re coming from the alarm-clock app on my iPhone.
I continue lying there, debating with myself about whether I should hit the gym or hit the snooze button.
I choose to tap the snooze button for “just 5 more minutes of sleep.”
45 minutes later, I wake up, forgo the gym, and head to work.
This pattern continued on for longer than I care to talk about…
The thing is though; I really, really wanted to stop hitting snooze and start waking up earlier to workout, but I just couldn’t “motivate” myself to do it.
So, there I was. Lying in my bed at the crack of dawn. Alarm clock blaring; moment of truth dawning upon me: should I wake my ass up and workout?—or should I stay in bed, rationalizing to myself that I’d go to the gym after work, even if I knew I probably wouldn’t?
Most of the time, I’d lie in bed, going back and forth in my head about whether I should get up or not… Do I really have enough time to workout and get ready for work? Will I get to work on time? What if I don’t have the energy to push myself in the gym this early in the morning?
Next thing I know, I’m back in la-la land, snoozing away until the last possible minute before I absolutely had to get up and get ready for work.
And of course, even though I told myself I’d hit the gym afterwards, I’d end up skipping almost every time.
Not only was I neglecting my physical health. But I was also neglecting my mental health.
Something needed to change...

"The law of your mind is this: You will get a reaction or response from your subconscious mind according to the nature of the thought or idea you hold in your conscious mind." - Dr. Joseph Murphy (Author, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind)
(... Yes, I'm fully aware of the sketchy title. Don't let it fool you. This isn't some "Secret" non-sense.")
Back to the book... Here's what Dr. Murphy says about believing in yourself:
“The law of your mind is the law of belief itself"
To put it another way: what we believe makes us who we are.
Having said that, it’s only natural to ask yourself the following question:
“What do I believe?”
The famous psychology writer William James observed that whatever people expect to be true will be so, regardless of whether the object of their belief exists.
In the Western world, we tend to place a lot of value on “the truth” (i.e. "I’ll believe it when I see it") — and this is no doubt super-important — but this paradigm pales in comparison to the power of *belief*, and how much of an impact it has on shaping our lives (both for better and for worse.)
The bottom line is this: whatever you give your subconscious—false or true, good or bad—it will register as fact.
That said, you might want to avoid joking about misfortune and be more mindful about certain types of self-deprecating humor… because the subconscious has no sense of humor.
A mentally disturbed person and a mentally stable person share the same power of belief; the mentally stable/sane people are different from the mentally disturbed/insane only in that they retain objectivity about their beliefs. When a man in a hospital says he's Elvis Presley, he's not “making it up,” he knows he's Elvis.
We need to use this same power to help us achieve our own goals in life + business ...
Beginning right now, make the decision to begin using this power (of belief) to stop wishing and start knowing that you're:
- a business genius, or - the perfect spouse, or that - you've got the physique of an Adonis. - (or, obviously, whatever else you want to do, be or have in life + business.)
The trick is to choose to know something that seems almost crazy, but not quite—something that seemed impossible to us a year ago, yet at the same time would really be something that fulfills our deepest desire.
ACTIONABLE INSIGHT:
After you’re done reading this, take out a sheet of paper and write “what do I believe?” up top.
Now, apply this question ("what do I believe?") to each dimension of your life — physical, mental, emotional, spiritual — and write down your answer. For example, if you were to apply it to the emotional area of your life, you might ask yourself something like this: "what do I believe about my level of confidence when it comes to public speaking, and persuading people through conversation?"
Next, take a look in the mirror and repeat what you wrote down… does it empower you? Inspire you? Get you excited about your life? If not, it might be a good idea to re-evaluate your beliefs.

http://www.MeaningfulHQ.com // Episode 069: Overcoming Procrastination - 3 Unconventional Methods That Work
There’s this Dutch survey that says 95% of people are chronic procrastinators.
I think the other 5% are liars.
EVERYONE procrastinates sometimes. Some people are just better at containing it than others.
"How do I get over my bad habit of procrastination?"
That question - or some variation of it - is one of the most common queries about the topic of productivity ... And it'll probably stay that way for another thousand years — or until we all becomesuper productive transhumanist robo-peeps — whichever comes first.
We’ve all got our own little reasons for procrastinating…
I've got this make-it-or-break-it project to work on right now... BUT FIRST, I've gotta manually create an index in my Moleskine for all my blog post ideas.
My taxes are due tomorrow... BUT FIRST, I should probably clean up the kitchen; it's a total mess in here.
I've gotta write + publish this article about the 10 reasons why Bruce Jenner is a total weirdo... BUT FIRST, let me catch up on some 'House of Cards' real quick.
And it goes on and on ... Until you catch yourself and consciously decide to stop the train and get off in favor of what needs to get done RIGHT NOW.
Some of us can jump off the procrastination train and get to work immediately ...
The vast majority however, end up flying into a shiny but non-essential task like a moth in a bright room... Next thing they know, they've totally lost track of what was supposed to have gotten done that day.
Any of the above sound familiar?
If yes, then stay with me ... because you, my friend, are about to learn some very unconventional (and super powerful) methods for getting over procrastination. Including a particularly interesting method that involves the power of — get ready for it — “positive procrastination.”
But we'll talk more about that in tip #2.
For now, let’s dive into the first method (before you decide to procrastinate on reading this article.)
#1. Never Be Prepared.
Here’s an example of a reason I always used to come up with to rationalize my own procrastination problem: “I’m a perfectionist” or, “it’s gotta be perfect.”
You and I both know it’s never ever the perfect time or place to do something.
Wanna know how I overcame this problem?
First, I realized that the biggest thing holding me back from accomplishing the things I wanted most out of life was my obsessive attachment to perfection.
Next, I realized that the reason I called myself a “perfectionist” was because I was afraid of what might happen if I failed at something (what would they say?)
Finally, I came to the realization that I can never be fully prepared for anything in life. But I can always be ready.
And that became my motto: “I’m never prepared, but I’m always ready.”
Never prepared. Always ready.
Same goes for you.
METHOD #1: NEVER BE PREPARED (Be ready instead.)
The next two tips and “hacks” come from the habits of unintentional efficiency experts of the past.
QUICK NOTE: DON'T PROCRASTINATE ON READING FINISHING THIS ARTICLE, DAMN IT!
No, you won’t “read this later.” All of us over-estimate our capabilities. We commit to dinners and events 3 months from now, thinking that we’ll have more free time in March than we did in January. Does that ever happen? Not for me. At least not often enough. If you convince your brain that you’ll read this later, what will happen is this: it’ll just get buried along with that other pile of shit you tell yourself you’ll do later. But this is not shit. This is your life. Your beautiful, totally awesome and meaningful life. Do not let your dependance on future time derail you from experiencing your life to the max. If nothing else has worked for you so far, this little list of tips will... Believe that and you’ve already won half the battle.
#2. The Power of Positive Procrastination.
Robert Benchley, a humorist + writer for The New Yorker, once wrote an essay in which he explained how he was able to develop the self-discipline to everything below in one sitting:
read a scientific article about tropical fish,
build a bookshelf,
arrange books on said shelf, and
respond to a letter from a friend that had been sitting on his desk for 20 years.
According to Benchley, all he had to do was write up a to-do list for the week and put the aforementioned tasks *below* his *top* priority… which was to write an article.
In his own words, Benchley wrote:
“The secret of my incredible energy and efficiency in getting work done is a simple one … The psychological principle is this: anyone can do any amount of work, provided it isn’t the work he is supposed to be doing at that moment.”
Translation: procrastinators tend to avoid doing one task by doing another, and very rarely do they ever sit still.
METHOD #2: USE THE POWER OF POSITIVE PROCRASTINATION. (Shoot for the moon, land amongst the stars.)
#3. The Nothing Alternative.
A novelist named Raymond Chandler pioneered “The Nothing Alternative” as a method of defense against procrastinating on his daily prose. Chandler couldn’t commit himself to cranking out 250 words every 15 minutes like writer Anthony Trollope. So he decided to literally wait around for inspiration to strike…
Personally, I find that inspiration never strikes while waiting around. Instead, I’ve found that inspiration strikes when I’ve cultivated a habit of consistency — to work, to write, to record — every single day. In the beginning, the work sucks a lot and often. But the more you do it, the better you become at it.
But this isn’t the kind of “waiting around” Raymond Chandler used to do.
His method of “waiting around for inspiration” was to set aside 4 hours every morning and give himself an ultimatum: Write, or do nothing at all.
In his own words, Chandler said this about writers who suffer from procrastination:
“He [the writer] doesn’t have to write, and if he doesn’t feel like it, he shouldn’t try. He can look out of the window or stand on his head or writhe on the floor, but he is not to do any other positive thing, not read, write letters, glance at magazine, or write checks.”
[…]
“Write or nothing. It’s the same principle as keeping order in a school. If you make the pupils behave, they will learn something just to keep from being bored. I find it works. Two very simple rules, a. you don’t have to write. b. you can’t do anything else. The rest comes of itself.”
That’s The Nothing Alternative, right there, and you can use it on pretty much any task to make procrastination a problem of the past.
Your own work might not be as simple and clearly defined as Chandler’s, but you can certainly benefit from the clarity that comes from setting aside the time to focus on your ONE most important thing.
To try this out for yourself, figure out your most important goal for tomorrow morning and set aside 90 minutes of totally un-interrupted time to focus on that goal. No email. No smart phone. No non-sense. No Facebook, either. Shut-down your wifi if you need to. This is your time to turn it up to high gear and fucking focus.
METHOD #3: USE THE NOTHING ALTERNATIVE. (Do or die.)
Quick recap: 3 Unconventional Methods For Overcoming Procrastination1
#1. Never Be Prepared. (Be ready instead.)
#2. Use The Power of Positive Procrastination. (Shoot for the moon, land amongst the stars.)
Dutch Study: de Ridder, D. T., Lensvelt-Mulders, G., Finkenauer, C., Stok, F. M., & Baumeister, R. F. (2012). Taking stock of self-control A meta-analysis of how trait self-control relates to a wide range of behaviors. Personality and Social Psychology Review, 16(1), 76-99.
The average person's attention span is 8.25 seconds. That's less than a God damn goldfish. (We're not too far behind -- goldfish are clocking in at 9 seconds.)
Right now as you're reading this article, you've probably got several other tabs open in your browser.
All of the above are the result of technology...
Wasn't technology supposed to make our lives easier?
Wasn't it supposed to help us focus more? Do more? Be more?
... Guess not.
In today's episode of the Meaningful Show podcast, you're going to learn a simple strategy that will help you learn how to focus and get things done... and not just any old thing; but the most important things.

Meaningful Show, Episode #66: Weight-Loss and Willpower:
Every week, there's a new weight loss pill or "proven method" to fat loss being peddled by some sketchy character in an Under Armour tank top. Maybe you've even fallen for their crap and pulled the trigger on whatever magic pill or piece of exercise equipmentthey had for sale at 2:00am on a Wednesday night.
This is NOT that.
In fact, it's the total opposite of a "magic" solution to weight loss... It's a *scientific* solution to weight loss.
Recently, I came across a pile of science-backed research on weight loss while I was reading a fascinating book called "Willpower". After sifting through hundreds of experiments about weight loss and willpower, here's what the authors recommend to anyone who's ready to start taking this whole weight loss thing seriously:
If you're serious about controlling your weight, you need the discipline to follow these three rules:
#1. Never go on a diet.
#2. Never vow to give up chocolate or any other food.
#3. Whether you're judging yourself or judging others, never equate being overweight with having weak willpower.
Here's some more food for thought from the authors of "Willpower":
"You may not have kept your resolution to lose ten pounds this year, but that doesn't mean you should take up a diet or swear off sweets. And you certainly shouldn't lose faith in your ability to accomplish other feats, because being overweight is not a telltale sign of weak willpower, even if most people think so..."
Yah wanna figure out how to stop binging on burgers, Big Gulps, and other fat-boy foods?
Listen in on today's episode of the podcast to find out about the research behind weight loss and willpower, and how to use it to your advantage in order to get that gut back in check, once and for all.

"The gold standard for communication training programs." --USA Today
Business communication sucks. At each meeting and presentation, we are inundated with information, leaving us thirsting for inspiration. Sure, we will check off an action item because we have to . . . but what if we were actually inspired to do something? What if we were so moved that we wanted to do it?
Leaders must earn the license to lead. Not by expertise, authority, or title alone, but by influence. In Communicate to Influence, you will learn the secrets of the Decker Method -- a framework that has been perfected over the past 36 years. Ben and Kelly Decker add fresh insights to these proven principles so that you can ignite change and inspire action. Discover:
The Five White Lies of Communicating: learn which barriers prevent you from getting better
The Communicator's Roadmap: use a tool to visually chart what type of communication experience you create
The Behaviors of Trust: align what you say with how you say it to better connect with your audience
The Decker Grid: shift your message from self-centered, all about me content to relevant, audience-centered content that drives action
You are called to communicate well. Not only on the main stage, under bright lights, but every time you speak with your colleagues, your clients, and other stakeholders. It's time to learn how. Stop informing. Start inspiring.
BEN DECKER & KELLY DECKER are the leading experts in the field of business communication. They consult on messaging, cultivate executive presence among the leadership of Fortune 500 companies and startups alike, and regularly deliver keynotes to large audiences. This marks the first episode of a new series here on the podcast: Meaningful Mondays.
These new Meaningful Monday episodes will usually be shorter and faster-paced than my interviews and audiobook summaries. I decided to start Meaningful Mondays because I thought about how de-motivating Monday mornings can be for so many people...
Especially if you're punching the clock every morning at a job that doesn't fulfill you.
My hope is that this new addition to the show can give you something positive, powerful, and inspiring to start your week with.
Here's the first of what I hope to be many Meaningful Monday episodes, and it's inspired by an old Jim Rohn speech I used to listen to whenever I felt like I might be making excuses for not bringing my best on a daily basis; whenever I was faking it, and perhaps not being the best "me" that I possibly can be (at work, at home, at the gym, anywhere). I hope you enjoy listening to this episode. But more importantly, I hope you *do* something with it.

How easy is it to get up in the morning when you know you're not doing all that it takes?
Not very easy at all… You can just lay there awake thinking — oh "what’s a few more minutes in bed, it won’t matter much anyway"
WRONG — it does matter. It will matter.
NOW, how easy is it to get up in the morning when you're pouring it on, doing the best you can, anxious to get going to make progress toward your dreams.
it's a whole different story.
when you're resting to renew your reserves it's much different than
resting to avoid your day
when your psyched up and excited for your life,
when you're excited for what you plan to accomplish for the day,
it's amazing you'll wake up before the alarm clock even tries to startle you awake
your successes fuel your ambition
your successes give you extra energy
your successes pave the way for more success
it's the snowball effect with one success you're excited to meet another
and another and another… and pretty soon
the disciplines that were so difficult in the beginning,
the disciplines that got you going are now part of your philosophy.
How do you know when you're successful?
Do you have to be a millionaire?
NO,
all we ask of you is that you earn all that you possibly can,
if you earn 10,000 a year and that's the best you
can do that's enough...
God and everything else will see to it that you're OK
the key is to just do the best you can
if it's ten thousand a year — wonderful.
if it’s a hundred thousand a year — wonderful.
if it's a million a year — wonderful.
it doesn't matter if it’s $10,000 a year or a million a year
it doesn't matter — as long as you've done the best you possibly can...
EARN the most you possibly can,
BE the most you possibly can,
and here's why: the essence of life is GROWTH,
the essence of life is growth--to do the best you can!
… and here's what's interesting — humans are the only life form that will do LESS than they possibly can,
humans are the only life form that will settle for less,
every other life for me except human beings drive to its maximum capacity...
how tall a tree grow?
as tall as it possibly can!
you never heard a tree growing as half as high is it could,
no, trees don't grow half, trees send their roots down as deep as possible,
stretch their limbs up as high as possible,
produce every leaf possible, and every fruit possible,
as a matter a fact...
you never heard of the human physically growing half... we keep growing until we’re done...
now that's a part of life we can't control,
it's genetically coded and that's probably why we keep growing 'til we’re done,
because we can't control that part,
it's the rest of the growing that we control,
the growing of our minds--the expansion of our minds that
we CAN control, and that's what tends to get away from us.
All life forms inherently strive to their MAX EXCEPT for human beings...
Now why wouldn't human beings strive to their maximum possibility?
Here's why: because we've been given the dignity of *choice*.
Choice makes us different than alligators and trees and birds.
The dignity of choice makes us different than all other life forms...
.. and here's the choice —— to become PART of what we could be; enough to get by...
OR to become ALL that we can BE...
my best advice for you is to CHOOSE the ALL.
Earn all you can,
make all the friends you can,
read as many books as you can,
develop as many skills as you can,
see as much as possible, DO as much as possible,
make as much fortune as possible, give as much away as possible...
THE MAX — there’s no life like it! — I'm telling you, once I got on track I've never looked back.
Pick up the challenge, go for it, take the best of the two “easy’s"
take the route of "it's easy to get ahead”, "it's easy to do all you can”, “it’s easy to succeed”, “it’s easy to have financial freedom"
the more you do, the more you get.
So the two primary benefits of positive reinforcement are:
#1: to build good habits, and
#2: to create more energy to fuel your ambitions, your desires, your achievements.
How can you isolate what's working for you, and what isn’t?
how can you make sure that you’re reinforcing your positive disciplines?
Well if it isn't apparent — easy to see right away,
if what you're doing is happening in such small increments that you're not sure if you're on track,
then you need to be writing it down,
you need to keep a journal anyway,
but if you really aren't sure that what you’re doing is making measurable progress,
you need to keep a written record,
you need to write down everything that may be relevant in your day--what you did,
who you saw, what you felt; how it may or may not affect you now and in the future...
The best way to track your activities at the day is to write them down
the best way to track your activities of the week is to write them down,
the best way to analyze your progress through the year is to have written it down…
WHY?
So you can look back on it.
Because by keeping a written record of your life you will be more accountable,
by putting into writing the action steps you have planned you will easily see what works and what doesn’t.
Most people just try to get through the day—
never writing anything down,
never really keeping track of their progress along the way
never really knowing if they are doing all they can to reach their goals,
to drive their ambition.
But gifted people learn to get FROM the day,
they don't let a day end without picking up some valuable experience, some emotional content,
Some idea that might positively affect their future
to get the most from the day.
To learn the most from a day you need to be able to reflect on the day.
in order to reflect on the day you need to do something that day that deserves to be reflected on,
pablo picasso said that “Action is the foundational key to all success.”
Bob Dylan said “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.”
So, how do you know when YOU are successful?
The day you get up and spend most of your time taking action towards something you’ve decided on your own is worth pursuing for its own sake —and then the very same evening of that very same day—climbing into your bed with a pen and a pad, ready jot something down worth reflecting on tomorrow.
BOOK DESCRIPTION: Nightline anchor Dan Harris embarks on an unexpected, hilarious, and deeply skeptical odyssey through the strange worlds of spirituality and self-help, and discovers a way to get happier that is truly achievable. After having a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure, involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had both propelled him through the ranks of a hyper-competitive business and also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out… We all have a voice in our head. It’s what has us losing our temper unnecessarily, checking our email compulsively, eating when we’re not hungry, and fixating on the past and the future at the expense of the present. Most of us would assume we’re stuck with this voice – that there’s nothing we can do to rein it in – but Harris stumbled upon an effective way to do just that. It’s a far cry from the miracle cures peddled by the self-help swamis he met; instead, it’s something he always assumed to be either impossible or useless: meditation. After learning about research that suggests meditation can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain, Harris took a deep dive into the underreported world of CEOs, scientists, and even marines who are now using it for increased calm, focus, and happiness. 10% Happier takes readers on a ride from the outer reaches of neuroscience to the inner sanctum of network news to the bizarre fringes of America’s spiritual scene, and leaves them with a takeaway that could actually change their lives.

SHOW NOTES:
How to wake up early and workout: 7 simple steps to make waking up and working out a sustainable habit for life.
In previous episodes of the podcast — namely, Designing Your Morning Ritual, and How to Make New Year's Resolutions Stick — I’ve talked about how much I love waking up and working out. The reasons for this are many, including the research-driven data that shows how exercising in the morning actually gives us MORE energy, as opposed to the widely touted myth that working out early drains us of energy.
Again, the reverse is true -- though not for every one, at least for most of us -- not only does working out in the morning help us become more energetic, it can actually set a powerful series of events in motion to help you create more productive days, weeks, months, and years for yourself.
The Endorphin Effect: If you wake up early and workout vigorously for a minimum of 45 minutes or more, then a naturally-produced chemical known as Endorphin begins to surge through your body, giving you a natural high (also known as “runner’s high). This chemical kicks into your body because it’s meant to mask the pain your putting your muscles through when you lift weights or do hard core cardio. (Side note: when you’re lifting weights, you’re basically ripping and tearing your muscle fibers… the reason why muscles actually grow in size isn’t because of the lifting of weights, it’s because of the eating of foods. When you tear up your muscle fibers in the gym, you need to put nutrition-dense foods back into your body in order to give them a reason to re-build… and if you want them to come back larger, it’s best to optimize your diet accordingly.)
The Dopamine Effect: Now, once you’ve gotten out of the gym, you probably feel really good about yourself for having gotten up early and workout out. This then, gives you small doses of yet another naturally occurring chemical in your body, known as Dopamine, which gives you the feelings of positive reinforcement for having done a good job.
As The Day Goes On: Now you’re in your car and headed to work feeling like a champion. You already know that no one else in your peer group got up as early as you did to workout, so that just makes you feel even better. Whether that’s right or wrong is neither here nor there — but for a lot of us, it *is* true.
If you add a little morning meditation into the mix, that’s even better. And if you add a little visualization and gratitude action on top of that — well, then, you’ll *really* be setting yourself up for a kick-ass day.
Okay, I get it. So how do I get myself to wake up early and workout?
1. Plan it out. Plan all your workouts BEFORE you step foot into the gym. Write it down, or get an app like Gym Buddy to keep you on track. Having plans and goals are crucial. Otherwise you’ll end up screwing around and leaving early.
2. Picture yourself doing tomorrow’s workout today. One of the things I do every night before going to bed is to whip out my phone and go over my workout routine for the following morning real quick before calling it a night. I envision myself CRUSHING it in the gym. Performing every exercise and hitting new personal records for each of them. Yes, it helps. And yes, it makes a difference. Currently, I’m keeping my workouts in an Evernote checklist titled “Dean’s Training Program: Week 2”. The tools I use change from time to time, but the process doesn’t.
3. Set it and forget it. Place your alarm clock far enough away from your bed that you must physically get out of bed in order to shut that thing off.
4. Never hit the snooze button. “Just 5 more minutes” rarely ends up being just 5 minutes… Trust me, I know this from personal experience on more than one occasion. Do not let your mind trick your into hitting the snooze button. Avoid waking up two hours later and kicking yourself for missing a workout, and then allowing that guilt to have a negative impact on the rest of your entire day. It’s not worth it.
5. Jump out of bed like a machine. Sometimes I wake up with such force that I scare my poor wife out of her beauty sleep. You don’t need to jump right out of bed, but you DO need to feel as if you wanted to. Be robotic with it. Wake up and go. Don’t think about how little you slept last night. Don’t think about how many things you need to do today. As soon as your alarm goes off, get your body out of your bed and get moving.
6. Prep your pre-workout supplementation. I like to have a pre-workout drink before I go into the gym. And because it’s powdered, I put it in an empty shaker and place it next to my bed side table (right next to a bottled water) so that it’s ready to be consumed with my vitamins as soon as I get up in the morning. Wondering what I put in my pre workout drink? It varies, but it’s usually a powdered mix of caffeine, branch-chain amino acids, buffered creatine monohydrate, and arginine. But if you're looking for a set of all-in-one supplements that can give you a solid boost, without making you feel like an over-stimulated crack addict, I'd recommend Onnit Labs. They're an ethical company that produces high-grade supplements, with research-driven data to support their brands.
7. Prepare your attire the night before. I go to sleep with my gym clothes on. But I’m a dude, so that’s usually just a pair of sweats and a tank top. If you can’t do that, then pick out exactly what you need to wear to the gym the next morning and have it ready to go. If you go straight work after your workout, then bring your toiletries and work clothes with you. Most gyms have lockers. Hopefully yours is clean.
Quick recap: 7 steps to wake up early and workout
1. Plan it out
2. Envision tomorrow's workout today
3. Set it and forget it (place your alarm clock far enough away from the bed so that you've got to physically get out of bed to turn it off... then STAY out of bed :)
4. NEVER hit the snooze button
5. Be robotic with it. Jump out of bed like a machine
6. Prepare your pre-workout supplementation for immediate consumption upon rising
7. Prepare your pre and post workout attire the night before
BOOK DESCRIPTION: In seven simple steps, Uncovering Happiness uses cutting-edge mindfulness and self-compassion techniques along with innovations in neuroscience to release natural antidepressants in the brain. Dr. Goldstein shows you how to take back control of your mind, your mood, and your life. Most of us believe when we’re depressed that our situation is hopeless. That’s a mistake, Dr. Elisha Goldstein reassures us in Uncovering Happiness. The secret to overcoming depression and uncovering happiness is in harnessing our brain’s own natural antidepressant power and ultimately creating a more resilient antidepressant brain.Uncovering Happiness is grounded in two key foundations: mindfulness and self-compassion, and backed by recent scientific discoveries. New research shows that mindfulness reduces the risk of relapse in people who have experienced depression and can be a significant alternative, or supplement, to medication. The second foundation is self-compassion—a state of mind in which you understand your own suffering with an inclination to support yourself. Goldstein explores our natural antidepressants—along with mindfulness and self-compassion, also purpose, play, and confidence—and offers specific techniques for putting them into action. Together, these elements can transform something that typically forces us to spiral downward and turn it into an upward spiral of self-worth and resiliency.
At its core, Uncovering Happiness contains a persuasive argument for hope: Having had depression in the past doesn’t mean you must also suffer from it in the future. You can build up the sections of the brain that protect you from depression, and slow down the sections that foster it. Doing this allows the brain’s own natural antidepressants to emerge, grow stronger, and contribute powerfully to the resiliency that we need to enjoy the good times, survive difficult times, and open ourselves up to lives that truly feel worth living.
